Dharma Temple

Finding the balance between tradition and context was essential for this small Esoteric Buddhist temple in regional Victoria.  The context here is a rural site in a small town just outside of Melbourne, where the country is flat and dry, and endless paddocks feature aging farmhouses and sheds.  Strict planning controls and keen spectators meant that this building needed to sit within this rural landscape in a way that felt and looked like it belonged if it had any chance of being realised.  Meanwhile, the client’s cultural background and lived philosophies called for a building that was still inherently ‘Buddhist’, or at least an abstraction of those ideas.  Construction commenced in early 2022 and its completion is imminent.
